Two Big Players Could Leave The Warriors If Giannis Comes In
Despite the uncertainty of the future NBA’s global landscape, one fact still remains. The Warriors want Giannis Antetokounmpo. If they were to succeed, 2 major players could be on their way out.
According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, Golden State is, more than ever, trying to get the greek freak. After all, if there is one team able to pull it off, it’s definitely them. As we all remember, the summer of 2016 saw Kevin Durant get traded from the Thunder to what was already a talent-packed team of Golden State.
Getting Giannis? How Exactly?
If there is ever a window of opportunity for the Dubs to get Giannis, it would be during the summer of 2021’s free agency. If Giannis doesn’t sign an extension with the Bucks by then, he will effectively be a free agent.
In this scenario, the Warriors would have to offer a max contract to the reigning MVP. To be able to do so, they will have to free up around $45 million of salary cap.
Not that simple, right? Can you guess Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green’s combined payroll with the Warriors?
This puts the Dubs in a tough spot. Getting rid of a Bay Area legend plus an inconsequential Wiggins, or snatch the next decade’s best player?
Of course, the Splash Brothers are untouchable, and not even in this conversation. Dray’s situation is a bit more hazardous, as his contribution will likely decline rather quickly.
In any case, if the Warriors want even the slightest chance to get Giannis, they will have to make some sacrifices. And if that means Wiggins and Green have to pack their bags, we can assume that Golden State will be ready to pull the trigger.
Not long ago, the Warriors front office was talking about his dream of a 20-year run at the top. To build such a dynasty, they need players of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s caliber. Rebuilding this team’s splendor will have to go through this kind of move. To be continued…
